The Apartment (1960)
Trailer
That's the way it crumbles... cookie-wise.
So basically: C.C. Baxter is one of the thousands of people working in a large New York insurance firm. He tries to climb up the corporate ladder not by his own strengths in the company, but by lending his apartment out to his superiors and their mistresses. When the head of the office gets word of this, he asks Baxter for a key - and gets it, reluctantly. At the office Christmas party, Baxter discovers the girl his boss is taking to his apartment is the very same elevator girl he's got a crush on. Also at this party, the elevator girl, Fran Kubelik, discovers that her sweetheart does not plan on leaving his wife for her. When Baxter returns home from the party, he is shocked to find Ms Kubelik passed out on his bed from an overdose.
Billy Wilder is a cinematic genius. The Apartment is one of my favourite movies ever - I do love rom-coms, tho. And even if you do not like rom-coms, this is still a very good movie. The premise is quirky and original. Jack Lemmon is also a brilliant actor and perfect for the role of Baxter. Shirley MacLaine is also totally adorable! Watch it just for her ... Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine make a cute couple and are perfect together in this movie.
This movie defs deserves to be on the list. It's clever, cute, and has a good story.
Ziggi seal of approval!
