Mononoke-hime (1997)
Trailer
Cut off a wolf's head and it still has the power to bite.
So basically: Ashitaka defeats a raging boar god when it attacks his village, but is now cursed. He goes west seeking answers and finds Iron Town, a town run by a ruthless woman named Lady Eboshi. Lady Eboshi has taken in city women and made them into iron workers as the men deliver goods to and from the town. Ashitaka also meets a girl named San, who is a child of the wolf tribe. Ashitaka gets in the middle of a war between Lady Eboshi, and the people of Iron Town, and the forest gods whose land is being destroyed.
This was my first Studio Ghibli film and defs my favourite. Miyazaki takes his audience into an ancient fantasy world filled with gods, demons, destiny, and love. All of the characters are wonderful and none of them are one-dimensional. Lady Eboshi is especially brilliant and, in my opinion, one of the best written characters ever. The story itself is fascinating and beautifully told.
This movie defs deserves to be on the list.
Ziggi seal of approval!
