Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)

Trailer

Ever want to see Ben Kenobi in drag? Here's your chance.
So basically: Louis Mazzini has inherited the hatred of his family, the D'Ascoynes, from his mother. She married an Italian man below her rank and her family refused to acknowledge her or her son from then on. His mother now dead, Louis now looks forward to inheriting the title of Duke of Chalfont, even if he is 8th in line. When one of the family members dies suddenly, Louis goes on a killing spree to get to the title.

What a sleaze-ball mama's boy. How can they make a movie with the main character who is that dislikeable! I mean, sometimes it works, but this was just annoying. And they didn't even admit that he was doing anything sleazy. Srs, go out and get yourself a job! Don't rely on family who have no obligation to help you! I get that you feel gypped, but get over it! Grr, Louis bugs me. And having two women? And that wasn't even seen as a bad thing. Gosh. Also, the pacing was a bit slow ... But, the irony of how he got caught for a murder he didn't actually commit was hilarious, tho I think it would be better if he hadn't got out, just for the funny.

No, I don't think this deserves to be on the list, based on the character of Louis Mazzini alone.

Ziggi seal of disapproval!

  1. I loved this film soo hard the first time, but I was soo angry at it the second time.

I think it needs a third viewing for a final verdict

  2. I think you're missing the point, the fact that Mazzini is amoral is the amusing part. We partake in his amorality. It's a revenge fantasy and he's a sociopath. He does have a job if you watch and he gets promoted to the top, so he doesn't need to do this, he is punishing them for their snobbery. I don't know from this blog, if you're English or American, but as an English person I can tell you, the class system is alive, well and just as unfair as it ever was. A little revenge fantasy is healthy when you have to live with it.
