The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Trailer

There's no place like Oz!
So basically: Dorothy and her dog, Toto, run away from home after one of her neighbours tries to confiscate Toto. She meets up with a crystal-gazing circus performer. The performer helps her and convinces her to go back to her farm. When she runs back home, she gets caught in a twister and falls unconscious on her bed. When she wakes up, she finds herself in a fantastical land filled with little people called munchkins. The Good Witch of the North gives her the ruby slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East, who died after being crushed by Dorothy's falling house, and tells her that to get home she must follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz. Along the way, she meets Scarecrow, who goes with her seeking a brain, Tin Man, who is in search of a heart, and The Cowardly Lion, who is looking for some courage.

It's hard to enjoy this movie as an adult now that I know all the terrible things that happened on the set. However, if you're oblivious to that, it's one of the best times you're going to have watching a movie. Dorothy is swept up into this brilliantly colourful world filled with amazing characters. It might be a little simple and childish, but it's a charming film filled with awesome musical numbers! I mean, srs, the musical numbers are the best thing ever.

I grew up with this movie and it has a special place in my heart, so I might be a bit biased, but it totally deserves to be on the list.

Ziggi seal of approval!

  1. No midget hanged himself in the making of the movie, it's a lie, when people say you can see it, you can't it's a big bird stretching it's wings...

Also I totally relate with Dorothy and everyone is like Your dog sucks and she's like fuck you you suck. Love. Also, started my red shoe fetish, totally.

  4. It's a crane stretching its birdy wings, I don't know how people misconstrued it as a dead midget...Here's the clip,

Keep your eye on the top/center-ish of the screen in the woods, you can see the bird moving around before, and then when she says "There it is" the crane stretches its big white and black wings...

  5. I was just referring to the thing that looked like the dead midget. I wasn't saying I believed there *was* a dead midget.

Besides, I was talking about how shitty Judy Garland's experience was.
